Outside Victoria Station
Victoria station was interesting, because there was honestly very little English being spoken. This made sense though, as through the conversations I heard it felt very transient - people coming and going, but in a more complete way than just going a few stops on the tube - this area was filled with travelers, people going home or coming home, people on vacation or on a work trip. I’ve found that traveling leads to a lot of self reflection - people tend to look a bit more inward in times of change or during phases of removing themselves from their routine.
As I didn’t have too many phrases to work with, I decided to do what I did within my process group, and cut them out and begin puzzling them together until i found something that worked. I wanted it to also reflect my own experience as of late, which has been an overall uneasiness towards familial relations - a lot of guilt from being apart.
When designing it, I was just going to make it into another RISO print, but last minute I decided to try to do some light animation / video work. The “wavy” movement of the text is meant to symbolize the movement of this area - both physically and metaphorically. I wanted the more “positive outlook” statements to feel less grounded. The slightly pixelated, rougher type style conveyed the contrast between words and actual sentiment - there is stress and uncertainty here.
